Springfield Illinois has a robust history of culture, politics, and architecture, and is a great source of identity for the city itself, and for Springfield residents. The attractions that focus on the city’s history are some of the best to check out.
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library
Located at 112 North 6th Street, Springfield IL 62701. This library was built in the mid 2000’s and serves it guests with a dizzying array of historical artifacts and documents centered around Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War era, along with allowing you the opportunity to trace even your family’s lineage to the state. Be sure and drop by!
Camp Butler National Cemetery
Located at 5063 Camp Butler Rd. Springfield, IL 62702. This cemetery is one of the original fourteen national grave sites authorized by Springfield’s own President Abraham Lincoln. Over 25,000 former troops, along with both Union and Confederate Civil War veterans are buried there, and is a very humbling sight to behold. Stop by Camp Butler with your family. You won’t regret it!
Dana Thomas House
Located at 301 E. Lawrence Ave. Springfield, IL 62703. The Dana Thomas House is a gorgeous piece of architecture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright during the late 1800’s and is a must see on your trip to Springfield. The tour takes a little over an hour and a donation is required to get in. Taking the tour around Christmas time is especially unique, as the curators have the house decorated in era-appropriate holiday decorations.
This list is by no means a complete list of things to do in Springfield, but hopefully it will give you and your family a better idea of things to consider doing when traveling there, and provide you with a great time and experience to remember for a lifetime!
